Years back, my friend offered me to learn Arabic Grammar. I had never bothered learning Arabic Grammar until I experienced a striking moment. Before that, I was just an ordinary Muslim who considered learning Quran confined to mere recitation. If sometimes (very rarely) I felt overwhelmed with emaan, I used to read the translation of the ayah also while I recited. For that purpose, I had a copy of the Quran with a translation in my native language.

When did I decide to learn Arabic Grammar?

Soon after my marriage, my first child was eight months old.

Children are blessings! Especially when you have your very first child. Holding your child in your arms for the very first time is indeed an incredibly joyous moment. I bet no one would deny my statement, which is a mother or a father himself. Every moment of your child is unique, especially if it is your first. As an average parent, I was excited about my first child. When she opened her eyes and smiled at me for the first time, I remember every moment she responded to my voice with her giggles.

She was now eight months old and was an active toddler, but she had not learned to walk yet. I was offering my Zohar prayer one day while my husband was also at home. While I was in my first rakah, she played nearby with her toy. Even in salah, she was in my peripheral vision and somehow managed to get my attention when she stood up, holding the corner of the table. I was alarmed as I raised for qayam in Salah.

The next moment was surprising for me; she just left her grip on the table, balancing her body weight on her tiny little feet (by that time, I had finished reciting surah Fatiha). She raised one foot and took a small step. Involuntarily my mouth opened wide to aw in amazement as if to say,” OMG ! OMG! she took her first step, she took her first step!”.

By the will of ALLAH, I was memorizing surah Al Munafiqoon these days. Thus i was reciting surah Al-munafiqoon in salah. And can you imagine? The following ayah I recited was the 9th ayah of surah al munafiqoon.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تُلْهِكُمْ أَمْوَٰلُكُمْ وَلَآ أَوْلَٰدُكُمْ عَن ذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَمَن يَفْعَلْ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْخَٰسِرُونَ

“O you who believe! Let not your properties or children divert you from the remembrance of Allâh. And whosoever does that, and then they are the losers.”

(63:9)

The meaning of this ayah shook me. Moments ago, I was more diverted toward my daughter’s actions, even in salaah. I had missed this pure miraculous message entirely from ALLAH had I not memorized the meaning of this ayah by chance. We do not learn Arabic Grammar.

Hence we miss out on lots of profound messages from the Quran in our daily life. We spend so much time, money, and effort attending university and college, but we are too busy for an Arabic grammar course. Is the message of our Lord so unimportant for us that we can not learn Arabic Grammar to understand it? Instead, we depend on translations done by other people.

It’s not bad that you read the translation, by why can you make an effort to understand the actual message by yourself? We all are well aware that a translation can never deliver the whole essence of the exact text. Still, we never try to learn Arabic Grammar.

Why is it Important to Learn Arabic Grammar?

Grammar is generally defined as a specific language’s exclusive design or structure. The better we understand how a language works, the more we get a complete command of it and convey meanings eloquently.

The Quran is revealed in the Arabic language, which is challenging for the non-experienced Arabic speaker to understand the message and meaning, such as rewards and punishments, divine commands, Prophets’ stories, etc.

Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA) said:

تَعَلَّمُوا الْعَرَبِيَّةَ؛ فَإِنَّهَا تُثَبِّتُ الْعَقْلَ، وَتَزِيدُ فِي الْمُرُوءَةِ

“Learn Arabic for it strengthens the mind and enhances chivalry” [Al-Baihaqi, Shu’ab El-Eman [branches of faith]]

It refers to the rules of composing phrases, clauses, and words. Therefore, learning grammar is essential to understanding words written in Arabic and its Grammar in-depth.

What are the religious benefits of learning Arabic Grammar?

Some ways to learn Arabic Grammar are as follows,

  • Relationship between Quran and Arabic

Allah chose it, and the Muslim holy Quran is written in Arabic. One of the biggest challenges that may face non-Arab Muslims is to learn Quran recitation and reading with Tajweed correctly to understand the holy book of Allah.

  • Understanding the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW)

The Arabic language has acquired a remarkable value; It allows you to understand the saying of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and His Sunnah. It also gives you a chance to gain insight into Islamic beliefs and manners.

  • Achieving Khushu in Salah

Prayers are the key to success in this life and Hereafter. You can increase Khushu and achieve the presence of your heart while performing Salah. Learning the Arabic language is the key to attaining Khushu in Salah because concentration can easily be achieved if you understand the Surah and Adhkar recited during Salah.
