Ramadan is one of  the Arabic month. It is a month which is distinguished from the other months by a number of virtues; which are as under.

Virtues of Ramazan – Fasting

1.Allah has made fasting obligatory in this month; as it is said in the Quran:

“So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan); he must observe Sawm (fasts) that month.”[al-Baqarah 2:185]

2. Fasting is virtues of Ramadan and is considered as one of the five pillars of Islam. Narrated in the Hadith.

Ibn ‘Umar reported that the Prophet (P.B.U.H) said:

“Islam is built on five (pillars): the testimony that there is no God except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; establishing prayer; paying zakaah; fasting Ramadaan; and Hajj to the House (the Ka’bah).” (al-Bukhaari, 8; Muslim, 16)

 Quran Revelation

3.Allah revealed the Quran in this month:

“The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Quran. Indeed; A guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong.”[Al-Baqarah 2:185]

Laylat al-Qadr

4.Allah has made a night in this month known as Laylat al-Qadr; which is better than a thousand months; as Allah says:

“Verily; We have sent it down in the Night of Al-Qadr.And what will make you know what the Night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is? The Night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is better than a thousand months (i.e. worshiping Allah in that night is better than worshiping Him a thousand months). Therein, descend the angels and the Rooh [Jibreel (Gabriel)] by Allah’s Permission with all Decrees;(All that night). There is peace (and goodness from Allah to His believing slaves) until the appearance of dawn.” [al-Qadar 97:1-5] virtues of Ramadan

Also the Quran says:

“We sent it (this Qur’aan) down on a blessed night (i.e. the Night of Al-Qadr). Verily; We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]”

[al-Dukhaan 44:3]

Forgiveness

5. Another virtue is Who ever fasts in the month of Ramadan Allah will forgive his sins as narrated in the Hadith:

Abu Hurayrah reports that the Prophet (P.B.U.H) said:

“Whoever fasts Ramadaan out of faith and in the hope of reward; his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Muslim; 760)

Paradise

6.Allah opens the gates of Paradise and closes the gates of Hell; and chains up the devils in Ramadan.

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah (P.B.U.H) said:

“When Ramadaan comes; the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are closed; and the devils are chained up.”

(al-Bukhaari; 1898; Muslim; 1079)

7. Every night Allah redeems people from the Hell in Ramadan and forgive them.   virtues of Ramadan

Imam Ahmad (5/256) narrated from the hadith of Abu Umaamah that the Prophet (P.B.U.H) said:

“At every breaking of the fast; Allah has people whom He redeems.”

8. Ramadan is a blessing for Muslims and a means of expiation for the sins committed previously as stated in the Hadith:

The Prophet (P.B.U.H) said:

“The five daily prayers, from one Jumu’ah to the next and from one Ramadaan to the next are expiation for (sins committed) in between; so long as you avoid major sins.”

Saheeh Muslim (233)

Fasting in Shawal

9. If one fasts in Ramadan and then follows it with six days of Shawal it is as if he has been fasting for one year:  virtues of Ramadan

Narrated from Abu Ayyoob al-Ansaari:

“Whoever fasts Ramadaan then follows it with six days of Shawwaal; it will be like fasting for a lifetime.”

Saheeh Muslim (1164)

Narrated that the Prophet (P.B.U.H) said:

“Whoever fasts Ramadaan, a month is like ten months; and fasting six days after al-Fitr will complete the year.” Ahmad (21906)

Umrah In Ramadaan

10. Umrah in Ramadaan is equivalent to Hajj.

Narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas; The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to a woman among the Ansaar;

“What kept you from doing Hajj with us?” She said; “We only had two camels that we used for bringing water.” So her husband and son had gone for Hajj on one camel; and he left the other for them to use for bringing water.” He said; “When Ramadaan comes; go for ‘Umrah; as ‘Umrah in Ramadaan is equivalent to Hajj.”

Al-Bukhaari (1782)

11. The Prophet (P.B.U.H) used to recite maximum Quran in the month of Ramadan because of its rewards.

Jibreel used to meet the Prophet (P.B.U.H) every night in Ramadaan and study the Qur’aan with him.

Al-Bukhaari; 6; Muslim; 2308.
