Hygiene is a must-to-do in Islam. Islam always emphasize on personal hygiene for both men & women. Quran advises Muslims to uphold high standards of physical hygiene and to be ritually clean. In Islam, cleanliness and purification are not only the requirements for the performance of worship, but are part of a Muslim’s faith.

Allah (SWT) says in the Quran:

“Truly, Allah loves those who turn unto Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves (by taking a bath and cleaning and washing thoroughly their private parts, bodies, for their prayers etc.) (Al Baqarah –Chapter# 2: Verse#222)

Personal grooming is a part of personal hygiene. Personal grooming is also a matter of focus in Islam. Outward appearance & grooming personally by both men & women is based on beautifying the physical attributes however clothing & adornment are also a part of personal grooming.

There are teachings in Islam how to groom yourself. There are various Hadiths and Quranic verses which tell us the perfect rulings of personal grooming in the pale of Islam.

Let’s get started with some basic questions about the rules of personal grooming in Islam which revolves in our mind you might want to know the answer of it… 🙂

What are the rulings of Islam for facial hair removal in women, beautifying/reshaping/cleaning eye brows and in removing any facial hair that is manly and causes embarrassment to a woman?

In general circumstances, facial hair should be left as is. However, if there is excessive facial hair on a woman’s chin or mustache reflecting manly looks, it is recommended to remove that hair. (Al Bahr Al Raiq)

As for excessive hair on other parts of the woman’s face, such that it is deemed masculine or looked at as a negative aspect of her general feminine beauty, then she is permitted to remove that slight amount of hair that would remove the masculine look. (Al Bahr Al Raiq)

It’s all about intentions. Keeping the intention in your mind that being a Muslim Women I am seeking personal hygiene for the sake of Allah SWT decree and this personal grooming is not for imitating the opposite gender. When a woman perform personal grooming to enhance her beauty it must be for pleasing her husband not anyone else.

Same intentions are applicable on Muslim Brothers.

“The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) cursed men who imitate women and cursed women who imitate men”. (Bukhari)

“The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) cursed a man who puts on the attire of women, and a woman who puts on the attire of men”. (Abu Dawud)

Is it permissible to facial hairs from arms as laser treatments are so in now a day

What are the requirements of removing hair using these kind of treatments?

The practice of hair removal is an inclination towards ones purity and cleanliness. There are various hair removal techniques.

Women are permitted to remove hair from arms and legs if it enhances her beauty BUT only for her husband.

As for men, removing hair from arms and legs, is not recommended and should be avoided as this constitutes resembling feminine qualities. However if a man does remove the hair of arms and legs, it would not be considered prohibited. (Al Hindiyyah)

Laser hair removal is permissible in all those places where removal of hair is permissible. (Al Ithaaf and Fiqh Al Halal Wal Haram by Sh. Khalid Saifullah Al Rahmani)

Using wigs and hair extensions which are merely decorative are such hair extensions allowed in Islam?

Hair extensions are of two types either fixing extensions for a couple of months. And temporary extensions for couple of hours usage

Those hair extensions which are made from human hair are clearly prohibited either they are fixing or temporary.

The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said

“Allah has cursed the woman who adds hair extensions and the woman who asks for it to be done.” [Sahih al-Bukhari (5934) and Sahih Muslim (2122)]

There are ways provided to us for personal grooming in Islam.

Obeying the rulings of personal grooming in Islam and laws may

not violate these laws. The decision it all lies on an individual.

Islam obedience by Muslim Woman This is one of the biggest left dilemmas to the Muslim Faithful especially in conjunction to beauty and the fact of the kind of generation we are in. But all in all, the Muslim Woman is mandated to fear Allah and try hard to avoid acts that may be unpleasant to the Him and attract other men to them.
