smoking is injurious to health. One of the dangers of tobacco is that it is so addicting. In addition, it causes a physical response in your body when you try to give it up. Therefore, quitting is often difficult. However, it is possible with the help of Allah and the personal commitment to improving yourself for the sake of Allah and your health.

“Do not cast yourselves, with your own hands, into destruction.” [Al-Baqarah 2:195]

Intention- The Most Important Thing To Quit Smoking

Make firm intention, from deep in your heart, to give up this evil habit. Trust in Allah’s words:

” […] And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah . Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].”

[Surat Al-Imran 3:159]

Rely on Allah sincerely, with complete determination not to return to smoking 🙂

Surroundings- Analyzing the root cause

Avoid the bad company of smokers and smoking environments that are full of the smell of smoke.

For example, if you have certain friends who gather together to smoke, choose to stay away from that environment for the time being. At a vulnerable stage, it is too easy to relapse by having “just one.” Remember, tobacco causes a physical addiction, and you must stay away altogether.

Alternatives- Healthy Diet And Drinks

Change the food diet by abstaining from foods and drinks that would entice the craving to smoke, such as spices, meat, tea, and coffee, and eat many vegetables and fruits. Drink a lot of water and keep yourself busy in other endeavors. Spend time in the mosque. Play sports. Pray. Spend time with your family and non-smoking friends. When the craving for smoking is there, adopt a healthy alternative such as sugar-free chewing gum or fruit drops.

Remember the words of Allah Almighty:

“And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good”

[Surat Al-Ankabut 29:69]

Treatments- Medical Treatment Brings a Drastic Change

Use medically tested and established procedures to help stop smoking, as directed by physicians, such as nicotine patches, nicotine gum, etc. Constantly reduce the number of cigarettes (weekly, monthly, and yearly).

“Whoever consumes poison, killing himself with it, then he will he consuming his poison in the hellfire, and he will abide in it permanently and eternally.”  [Al-Bukhari and Muslim from Jaabir]

Living With a Smoker?- Advice them

If you live with smokers, first of all, encourage them to quit, for the sake of Allah, their health, and their deen. Then, share with them the information here, and offer support through the complicated process of quitting.

Remember that we will face Allah alone, however, and we are responsible for our own choices. If they refuse to quit, you have the right to protect your health. Could you not allow it in the house?

If the smoker is a parent or other elder, we should not neglect to take care of our health out of “respect.” The Qur’an is clear that we are not to obey our parents in things that Allah forbids. Gently, but firmly, advise them:

“And do not entrust to the imprudent ones the possessions that Allah has placed in your charge”  [Surat An-Nisa 4:5]

Final Words:

Smoking is harmful to the human mind and its power to reason. An obvious demonstration of this is that one addicted to it passes through periods of severe craving, making it hard for him to think, concentrate, solve a problem, or do any critical matter until he smokes.

His digestive system is also affected, causing him frequent nervousness and trembling of the hands. He passes through periods of excitability, and he becomes an insomniac.

Therefore, instead of being the slave of Allah, a smoker becomes a slave to his cigarette.

Look ahead… Your kids, your mom, dad, wife, husband, whole family… If you Love your family. Decide now!
