Introduction:

Islam prohibits the use of any intoxicants and it is widely agreed on fact that drugs are haraam in Islam. Before going to the issue of why drugs are haraam in Islam, it’s important to know what are Drugs or intoxicants.

The drug is basically any medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when injected or otherwise introduced into the body. It’s fine if done for medicinal purposes. But becomes a disaster when used as an addiction.

Addiction is a physical and psychological dependence on any psychoactive substance e.g heroin, alcohol, tobacco, etc. Basically, drugs have such chemicals in them which are not digestible or consumable by the human digestive system nor are they excreted. Therefore the result is the deposition of these harmful toxic substances.

Accumulation of these substances has physiological as well as psychological impacts on humans. After depositing in the body regularly. However, our body gets used to a certain level of these substances, and when the ever this certain level gets disturbed, craving for drug starts. Many sorts of these drugs are actually given as pain relaxants or medicines due to their medicinal effects.

Drugs are haraam in Islam ???

Being Muslim, all of us are told that intoxicants or drugs are haraam in Islam. The reason being that it intoxicates a person. Making him unaware of the external world, making him lose control of himself and impairing his judgment, etc.
But now when we see around in our societies, sadly the majority of our fellow brothers and even sisters are involved in such kind of activities. So, we hear various questions about drugs and Islam and often encounter such situations, for example :

Are Drugs haram in Islam? Why Drugs are Haraam in Islam? Which specific types of drugs are haraam in Islam? Smoking tobacco does not make me unconscious, still, it’s haram? Can I taste just once, I just wanna know how it tastes like?

Many of us might have encountered a situation like “hey! everyone is drinking and smoking, common chill, have a party …!!! And at first, we are like “ Oh no! I do not smoke or drink”. “Why ??? “, “because of its haram in Islam”.

And then after a few moments, upon continuous invitation of sin, and effect of environment many our arguments start getting weaker and weaker. And still, a few moments later, some of one is joining the party for the first time, thinking “ I don’t matter, I m not an addict, and neither I m going to be one ever, it’s just a matter of few moments”. That’s how many people start their journey towards drug addiction.

Drugs Are Haraam, What is Islam saying????

What does Islam have to say about it? How should Muslims regard drugs? To understand this we have to see what the Qur’an and Ahadith say regarding intoxicants.

“O You who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones and (divination by) arrows are an abomination of Satan’s handiwork. Avoid (such abominations) that you may prosper.” (5:90)

Satan’s handy work ???? how ??? don’t you see how a human behaves after being intoxicated? They get their minds out of control, they don’t know what to speak and what not. They are not conscious about their prayers, and other duties of course.

It makes them completely out of senses. How can we expect something good of a person who is not in his senses? Obviously, it’s a handy work of satan? After this clear-cut revelation in the Quran, there is no point in arguing about its forbiddance or allowance in Islam. This ayah clearly addresses the question “ Are drugs haram in Islam? Why? “

“Satan’s plan is to sow hatred and enmity amongst you with intoxicants and gambling. And to hamper you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. Will you not give up?” (5:91)

Now coming towards the other questions we raised in previous headings,

Which specific types of drugs are haram in Islam?

Ans: Bear in mind that when the term intoxicant is used it also encompasses narcotics. Because they to among other things result in the loss of self-control. Ibn Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah said,

“Every intoxicant is khamr (wine) and every intoxicant is haraam (unlawful). Whosoever drinks wine in this world and dies whilst consumed in it and does not repent will not drink it in the next world. (Muslim) .

It means marijuana, tobacco, wine, beer, alcohol, weed, heroin, morphine, etc anything which brings unconsciousness is forbidden. I have seen people who were given laxatives for the release of mental stress as psychological therapeutic agents. And they started taking them as fun and are now addicts.

If it’s because of unconsciousness, a specific amount of each type of intoxicant is required to get intoxicated. So can I have it in a little amount without getting unconscious???

Ans: Jabir  narrated that the Messenger of Allah  said;

“Whatever intoxicates in a greater quantity is also unlawful in its smaller quantity.” (Tirmidhi, Abu Dawood and Ibn Majah)

There are countless Islamic as well as scientific reasons to stop using drugs. So, They ruin people’s lives physically, mentally, morally, and spiritually. Because addicts become the most rejected and miserable people of society.

They become a burden on their family as well as society. So, If anyone is involved with drugs they should stop immediately and seek help. If you see anyone around indulged in such unhealthy activity, they to counsel and help them out.

May Allah help and protect us all. Ameen.
