Salaat is the daily practice prayer performed by Muslims. Salaah is one of the most important five pillars of Islam. It is performed five times a day by all Muslims. Salaat includes many acts of worship, like the remembrance of ALLAH Almighty, the recitation of the Quran, standing humbly before ALLAH Almighty, bowing, prostration, request to Allah and Takbeer (saying the words “Allah o Akbar”).

Allah says:

“And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give Zakah. And that is the correct religion.” [Quran 98: 5]

One might think why muslims have to perform salaah five time every day. The timing of these prayers are set throughout the day so that one is constantly reminded of Allah and given opportunities to seek His guidance and forgiveness. Muslims perform salaah at the following times.

Fajar:

the Muslims start their day with the remembrance of Allah. It is performed before sunrise. (what if you left fajar? see our article.)

Dhohar:

After the day’s work has begun, one breaks shortly after noon to again remember Allah and seek His guidance

Asar:

Muslims perform this salaat in the late afternoon. Muslims start their evening activities with this salaat.

Maghreb:

just after the sun goes down, Muslims remember ALLAH again as the day is ending and night is approaching.

Isha:

Before going to sleep, Muslims perform this salaat to acquire His guidance, mercy and forgiveness.

Therefore, it is obligatory for who ever reaches one of the specified times of prayer , being adult and sane, to perform it.

Allah Subahana hu wa tala says:

“So Exalted is Allah when you reach the evening and when you reach the morning. And to Him is [due all] praise throughout the heavens and the earth. And (Exalted is He) at night and when you are at noon.” [Quran 30: 17-18]

Each salaat may take at least 5 minutes, but it may be lengthened as a person wishes. Muslims must pray salaat in a pure and peaceful environment, alone or together, in a mosque or at home, at work or on road, indoors or out, any where they are at the salaat time they must perform salaat.

Islam is a religion which is most concerned about care of its ummah. Allah subhana hu wa talla allows flexibility in salaat in certain situations like journey, war, illness Muslims have a right to make their salaat easy according to given rules.

Parents have to teach their children how to perform salaat. They must take strict focus on this act of their children. Parents have a right to beat their children if their child is ten years old and neglect his salaat.

Holy prophet ﷺ said:

“Command your children to perform prayer when they become seven years old, and beat them for (not performing) it (i.e. prayer) when they become ten years old; and arrange their beds (so that boys and girls sleep) separately.”
