What happens when we hear the Adhaan? Some of us may start rushing to prepare for salaah, some may carry on with whatever we are doing, while others will use this unique time to earn a special reward by answering the Adhan and reciting dua after Adhan.

Answering the Adhan and dua after Adhan has great rewards. There are a lot of hadiths regarding it.

How to answer the Adhan,

Narrated by Abu Said Al-Khudri that Allah’s Apostle said,

“Whenever you hear the Adhan, say what the Mu’adhdhin is saying.

Narrated by ‘Isa bin Talha that he had heard Muawiya repeating the words of Adhan up to

“Wa ash-hadu Anna Muhammadan Rasulullah

(and I testify that Muhammad is Allah’s Apostle.).”

Importance of Adhan:

Adhan is a highly recommended act in prayer. It has a unique significance and importance. When a person is hungry and thirsty on earth and performs namaz after listening to the azaan, ALLAH orders the angels to pray behind him in rows. So, They bow when he bows and say amen when he commands.

Hazrat Muahammad ﷺ said:

“When you hear the Adhan, repeat what the Mu’adhdhin says. Then ask Allah to exalt my mention because everyone who does so will receive ten rewards from Allah. Then beseech Allah to grant me Al-Wasilah, a high rank in Jannah, fitting for only one of Allah’s slaves, and I hope I will be that man. If anyone asks Al-Wasilah for me, it becomes incumbent upon me to intercede for him.” [Muslim]

Whoever utters the sentences of the Adhan will find his heart full of delightful grace and purity. As Muslims, we have to recognize the importance of Azaan. It is a component of our Islam beliefs. So, let us remember our duty of worshiping Allah.

Answering The Adhan:

Narrated by Yahya as above and added.

“Some of my companions told me that Hisham had said. “When the Mu’adhdhin said, “Haiya alas-sala(t) (come for the prayer).”

Muawiya said,

“La hawla Wala quwata illa billah.

(There is neither might nor any power except with Allah).” and added, “We heard your Prophet saying the same.”

Abdullah b. Amr b. al-As reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying:

“When you hear the Mu’adhdhin, repeat what he says, then invoke a blessing on me. Everyone who invokes a blessing on me will receive ten blessings from Allah.

Then beg from Allah al-Wasila for me, which is a rank in Paradise fitting for only one of Allah’s servants. And I hope that I may be that one. If anyone asks that I be given the Wasila, he will be assured of my intercession.”

(Sahih Muslim, Book #004, Hadith #0747)

What to say while answering Adhan?

Umar bin Al-Khattab reported that The Prophet (SAW) said

When the Mu’adhdhin says:

ٱللَّهُ أَكۡبَرُ ٱللَّهُ أَكۡبَرُ

(Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest)

And one of you should make this response:

ٱللَّهُ أَكۡبَرُ ٱللَّهُ أَكۡبَرُ

(Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest)

(and when the Mu’adhdhin) says:

أَشۡهَدُ أَنۡ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ

(I testify that there is no god but Allah)

One should respond:

(I testify that there is no god but Allah)

And when he (Mu’adhdhin) says:

أَشۡهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدٗ رَّسُولُ ٱللَّهِ

(I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah)

One should make a response:

أَشۡهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدٗ رَّسُولُ ٱللَّهِ

(I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah)

When he (the Mu’adhdhin) says:

حَيَّ عَلَىٰ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ

(Come to prayer)

One should make a response:

لَاحَوۡلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِٱللَّهِ

(There is no might and no power except with Allah)

When he (the Mu’adhdhin) says:

حَيَّ عَلَىٰ الۡفَلَاحِ

(Come to salvation)

One should respond:

(There is no might and no power except with Allah)

And when he (the Mu’adhdhin) says:

ٱللَّهُ أَكۡبَرُ ٱللَّهُ أَكۡبَرُ

(Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest)

Then make a response:

ٱللَّهُ أَكۡبَرُ ٱللَّهُ أَكۡبَرُ

(Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest)

When he (the Mu’adhdhin) says:

لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ

(There is no god but Allah)

And he who makes a response from the heart:

لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ

(There is no god but Allah)

He will enter paradise.”

Dua After Adhan:

Here is dua after adhan.

Jabir ibn Abdullah narrates that the Messenger of Allah, Allah, sent peace and salutations upon him and said, whoever recites the following when he hears the call (to prayer, i.e., after the Adhan) then my intercession for him becomes binding on the day of resurrection.

Oh, Allah! Lord, of this perfect call and this prayer to be established, grant Muhammad Al-wasilah (a high and unique place in Jannah) and Al-fadheelah (a rank above the rest of creation) and raise to a praised platform which you have promised him.

Rewards of Answering Adhan

Abu Huraira narrated that Allah’s Apostle said,

“If the people knew the reward for pronouncing the Adhan and for standing in the first row (in congregational prayers).

And found no other way to get that except by drawing lots. They would draw lots.

If they knew the reward of the Zuhr prayer (in the early moments of its stated time), they would race for it (go early).

And if they knew the reward of ‘Isha’ and Fajr (morning) prayers in congregation, they would come to offer them even if they had to crawl.”
(Sahih Bukhari, Book #011, Hadith #0589).

Supplications During Adhan:

Narrated by Anas ibn Malik:

“The supplication between the adhan and the iqamah is not rejected.”

(Sunan Abu Dawud, Book #2, Hadith #0521)

Abdullah b. Mughaffal reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying:

“There is a prayer between the two calls (Adhan and Iqama).

And he mentioned it three times, and the third time he said:

This applies to those who wish to do it.”

(Sahih Muslim, Book #004, Hadith #1822)

However, Abu Sha’tha’ reported: “

While we were sitting with Abu Huraira in a mosque, a man went out of the mosque after the call to prayer had been announced.

A man stood up in the mosque and set off Abu Huraira’s eyes followed him till he went out of the mosque. Upon this, Abu Huraira said:

This man has disobeyed Abul- Qasim (Muhammad) (may peace be upon him).”

(Sahih Muslim, Book #004, Hadith #1377)
