Being a Muslim ,in case of any suffering or difficulty one is suggested to turn to Quran or look to the tradition of their last Prophet, Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) for assistance and illness is no exception. The Quran and Sunnah being a whole code of life have mentioned various foods as a medicine in the context of their healing properties. One of the foods is repeatedly mentioned in hadeeth and Quran for its novel properties, and it is Honey.
The miraculous beneficial properties of honey, so beautifully ex-pressed in the holy Qur’an and Sunnah 14 centuries ago, while science is discovering it today. The Holy QURAN in Surat an-Nahl vr.68-69 says:
“And your Lord revealed to the bee saying: Make hives in the mountains and in the trees and in what they build: Then eat of all the fruits and walk in the ways of your Lord submissively. There comes forth from within it a beverage of many colours, in which there is healing for men; most surely there is a sign in this for a people who reflect”.
Verily its true, honey has a lot of healing properties and there are still a lot of signs of nature in it which are still hidden. Honey is a major topic of research for scientists working on natural medicines. Although a lot benefits of this magical liquid are known but many are yet to be discovered.
Honey was one of the most favorite and recommended foods of prophet Mohammad (s.a.a.w). following hadeeth can be sufficient to explain its importance:
” Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: I served drink to Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) in this cup of mine: Honey, Nabidh, Water and Milk “ [Bukhari & Muslim]
At another place, a very beautiful hadeeth explains significance of honey:
‘Honey is a remedy for every illness and the Qur’an is a remedy for all illness of the mind, therefore I recommend to you both remedies, the Qur’an and honey.’
Uncontaminated honey is a healthy, readily digestible, natural and energy rich food. It contains carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, enzymes and vitamins. One tablespoon of honey provides 60 calories and contains 11g of carbohydrates, 1mg of calcium, 0.2mg of iron, 0.lmg of vitamin B and 1mg of vitamin C. Along with its nutritional value, honey exhibits antibacterial and antifungal properties, anti-diarrheal, wound-healing and anti-inflammatory properties and anti-tussive and expectorant properties .In the following text we are going to explore some of the healing properties of honey for human.
For Digestive system:
For cure of poor digestion ,Mix honey with apple cider vinegar approx. 50/50 and dilute to taste with water. This aids digestion. (Also reputed to be wonderful for the joints.
” Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, reported: A person came to Allah’s Apostle (may peace be upon him) and told him that his brother’s bowels were loose. Thereupon Allah’s Messenger(may peace be upon him) said: Give him honey. So he gave him that and then came and said: I gave him honey but it has only made his bowels more loose. He said this three times; and then he came the fourth time, and he (the Holy Prophet) said: Give him honey. He said: I did give him, but it has only made his bowels more loose, whereupon Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Allah has spoken the truth and your brother’s bowels are in the wrong. So he made him drink (honey) and he was recovered “ [Bukhari & Muslim]
Honey and Eyes:
IT is an effective remedy for many eye diseases. An ancient Egyptian papyrus gives the recipe for a honey ointment and instructions how to us it. Ibn-e-Sina recommended honey mixed with onion juice, clover, or wheatgrass for the eyes. Especially for Conjunctivitis (pus in the eye) honey dissolved in equal quantity of warm water is applied, when cooled and can also be used as lotion or eye bath.
Anti Bacterial and Anti Fungal:
Liquid honey does not spoil , the reason is its high sugar concentration, it kills most bacteria by dehydrating them. Natural airborne yeasts cannot become active in it because the moisture content is too low. Natural, raw honey varies from 14% to 18% moisture content. As long as the moisture content remains under 18%, virtually no organism can successfully multiply to significant amounts in honey, though, importantly, enough bacteria survive to make honey dangerous for infants (especially Clostridium botulinum).
Honey As An Anti-Oxidant:
One of the greatest characteristics of honey is its potent antioxidant properties. Along with other vital components, honey has a large amount of potential flavonoids. Flavonoids are special chemical compounds bearing anti-oxidant and anti-cancerous, found in many fruits and other natural things. Being anti-oxidant it also helps to stop process of aging. Now a days extensive research is going on about the properties and benefits of flavonoids , a major source of which is honey.
