Different names refer to the Hijab in Islam, probably the most well-known of which is a cover or a headscarf. Most Muslims who wear the covering call it a hijab in Islam (حجاب), an Arabic word signifying “spread.” However, different types are referred to by various names. While it is ordinarily connected with ladies, Muslim men likewise some of the time wear a head covering as a method for demonstrating unobtrusiveness. Moreover, Christian and Jewish ladies in a few conventions wear a headscarf as a social practice or duty to humility or piety.

Why is Hijab in Islam necessary?

It takes center stage whenever there is a battle between truth and falsehood. It has always been a sensitive issue, but it recently received a great deal of attention due to the ruling and proposed ruling in several European countries (e.g., France and Germany) that prohibit its use in government and educational institutions.

For women who wear hijabs out of religious confidence, the truth is evident and fundamental. For others with limited knowledge or understanding of the Hijab in Islam, it can be confusing.

It is essential to understand several points related to modesty and Hijab in Islam. The first point is that modesty had been the standard in history until the later part of the past century. If one were to peruse historical books of various times and ages, one would find a modest covering of women in almost every society. The other point is that modesty is a component of several world religions, particularly Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It may come as a surprise to many that it was not Islam that invented modesty or Hijab. This existed in the laws of religions revealed before Islam, and remnants can still be found in the altered books of those faiths. With the final message given to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the order for Hijab in Islam was confirmed and finalized.

This is a reality since all of those revelations came from the same Source, Allah. Mary, mother of Jesus (may Allah exalt their mention), is infrequently portrayed without a traditional head covering, and one would guess she is Muslim.

One can still find Jewish and Christian women today who cover much the same way as Muslim women. It is one of the common bonds that are shared by these three major faiths.

Issue of Hijab in Islam and the Quran:

Islam has firmly emphasized the idea of decency and modesty in the collaboration between individuals from the opposite sex. Clothing regulation is a piece of that general education. There are two verses in the Qur’an in which Almighty Allah discusses the issue of decency and the Hijab in Islam as characterized before.

  • It protects women from such men; it symbolizes that she has been sanctified to one man only and is off-limit to all others.
  • It contributes to the stability and preservation of marriage and family by eliminating the chances of extramarital affairs.
  • Finally, it compels men to focus on the real personality of the woman and de-emphasizes her physical beauty. It puts the woman in control of strangers’ reactions to her.

In Chapter 24, known as an-Nur (the Light), in verse 30, Allah commands Prophet Muhammad as follows:

قُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ يَغُضُّوْا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ وَ يَحْفَظُوْا فُرُوْجَهُمْ, ذَلِكَ أَزْكَى لَهُمْ

“Say to the believing men that: they should cast down their glances and guard their private parts (by being chaste). This is better for them.”

Then in the next verse, Allah commands the Prophet to address the women:

قُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَ يَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوْجَهُنَّ…

“Say to the believing women that: they should cast down their glances and guard their private parts (by being chaste)….”

It is one of the commandments of Allah (SWT). The Holy Prophet (SAW) observes proper Hijab, blatantly defying Allah’s commandment (SWT). Ahlul Bayt (as) suffered hardships and offered unparalleled sacrifices to bring original Islam to us. Discarding Hijab in Islam puts their sacrifices in vain. And the pleasure of Allah (SWT) is the most incredible bliss. But for those who disobeyed, what punishment is awaiting them but Hell-Fire!
