Hazrat Umar bin Khattab, the second caliph of Messenger Muhammad (SAWW), accepted Islam in 616, one year after the Migration to Abyssinia.

Hazrat Umar bin Khattab was a strong-willed young man of great decision. He was carried up to reverence the Kabah and adore the unity of the Quran and their belief. That is why Islam was a danger to the Quraysh and evolved the most fierce and expressive in his attacks on Muslims. The Quraysh was one of Islam’s enemies, and the Messenger of God was a great teaser. Hazrat Umer to Islam is a famous incident in Islamic history.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Dua

In the 6th Hijri Quraysh started torturing Muslims. At that moment, Holy

Ibn Umar reported:

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said,

“O Allah, strengthen Islam with one of two men whom you love more: Abu Jahl or Umar ibn al-Khattab.”

Ibn Umar said,

“The most beloved of the two was Umar.”

It seems that His blessing has been answered in the acceptance of Umar bin Khattab.

Umar drove to Muhammad with the same sword he intended to kill him and accepted Islam in the semblance of Him and his companions.

Who would Perform the Assassination?

The sixth year of the Holy Prophet’s mission was when Quraish heads called a meeting. In this meeting, they examined the current situation of the tribe, the most prevailing one of which was the newly arising religion, Islam. All the leaders agreed upon the assassination of the Holy Prophet (SAW).

Now the problem was, who would accomplish that task. At one point, all eyes turned towards this brave man, who had come onwards Umar, the Son of Khattab. The Quraysh were confident that Umar bin Khattab was more than capable. Umar bin Khattab, being famous for his boldness, bravery, and hatred for Islam, was picked for this job and everybody in the meeting yelled that he was the right person for it.

Hazrat Umar Bin Khattab Task:

He took out his sword in light exasperation and ran for the Prophet’s house. On his way, he arrived at a secret believer in the Prophet (Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas) who seeing Hazrat Umer’s fierce expression, asked him where he was going. “I am going to kill Muhammad…”. Hazrat Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas went cold all over upon hearing this terrible decision and looked for ways to discourage him from his intention.

“By God, you are embarking on a complicated affair.

Muhammad’s companions never quit his side for the slightest moment. It is tough to find a way. Let us declare that you could find a way and kill him. Do you think that the Sons of Abd al-Manaf would allow you to roam voluntarily on the face of the Earth?”

Umar bin Khattab looked at his addressee sternly and asked,

“Or are you on his side as well?”

However, he received an unexpected answer:

“O Umar, forget about me; return to your family and community. Your brother-in-law and uncle’s Son, Said bin Zayd and his wife, your sister, Fatima, have submitted to Muhammad’s religion. Go and deal with them first!”

Hearing this, Umar bin Khattab changed his direction and went straight to his sister’s house.

The Voices of Recitation of Quran

Umar bin Khattab came to the door (of the house of his sister), he heard some voices of recitation coming from inside the home. There he called out to her angrily as he came. Khabbab ibn al-Pratt, who often came to recite the Quran to Said and Fatimah, was then reciting surah taha. Hearing the angry voice of her brother, she secreted the holy Quran in-home. Meanwhile, Umer bin Khattab entered the house.

Entering the house, he asked, “what was that voice coming from the house when I approached ?” They tried to assure him that it was the only normal conversation that he had heard, but he insisted: “Hear it, I did,” he said, “and you may have both become betrayers.” Hazrat Umar bin Khattab was demolished in anger at what he believed to be a prevarication and slapped his sister in her face. The blow caused her mouth to bleed.

He was going to attack again, but the sight of blood made him pause. He suddenly recognized and then asked her to show him what she was reading in a changed tone. She felt a change in him but said:

“You are an unclean idolater, and I cannot allow you to touch the Word of God.”

He washed his body and then read the Quran. That was the beginning of Surah Ta Ha (Chapter 20 of the Holy Quran). When he came to the verse:

إِنَّنِىٓ أَنَا ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنَا۠ فَٱعْبُدْنِى وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ لِذِكْرِىٓ

Indeed I, am Allah, there is no God save Me. So serve Me and establish Salat for My remembrance”. (20:14)

Umar bin Khattab exclaimed,

“Surely this is the Word of Allah. Take me to Prophet Muhammad (SAWW).”

Umar Bin Khattab Embracing Islam:

Umar bin Khattab then made his way to the house of al-Arqam. A watchman informed our Holy Prophet (PBUH) that Hazrat Umar bin Khattab had come with a sword on his waist. An air of worry and nervousness troubled everyone. At last, there was a knock heard on the door. Prophet peace be upon him allowed to open the door, and the view of the front after opening the door was very encouraging for Muslims.

Waiting in front of that door, Umar bin Khattab entered with his imposing appearance and weapon. On seeing him, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) asked him,

“Umar! What brings you here”?

He said,

“I am here to accept Islam.”

Hearing this, the Muslims screamed with happiness. In joy, they all recited the Takbir loudly:

Allahu Akbar… Allahu Akbar! (Allah is Great, Allah is Great!)

These sounds of Takbir that were heard on the streets of Mecca encircled in the horizon and, from there, grew to the atmospheres as waves filled with light.

This incident holds great importance in Islamic history, as Muslims were now empowered with great strength after the conversion of Hazrat Umer to Islam. After Hazrat Umer embraced Islam, Muslims started praying freely, spreading Islam readily.
